C.A.R.E. Animals for Adoption

Check out these fine furry creatures! All these and more are available for adoption at the Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton Street, in Evanston. If you are interested in adopting, please carefully read through our adoption procedures page for information about the adoption process, adoption hours, adoption fees, and directions to the shelter.

You can now see some of our available animals on WGN Noon News!

If you are looking for a specific breed that you don't see listed here, or are not in our area, try http://www.petfinder.com/ to search on breed, age, size, temperament and more near your zip code! Most large shelters, smaller organizations and breed rescue groups list their animals on Petfinder, so it's a great centralized place to do a pet search.  You may be able to save one of the millions of animals that are euthanized for lack of homes each year.

Dogs for Adoption

Last updated July 25, 2010

All of our dogs have gone through the ASPCA Meet Your Match Canine-ality assessment in addition to the Assess a Pet and SAFER behavior evaluations.

To find the "canine-ality" of each dog, we administer five assessments, including friendliness, playfulness, energy level, motivation and drive. Based on their results, our dogs are then placed in one of nine, color-coded categories: Purple (Couch Potato, Constant Companion, Teacher's Pet), Orange (Wallflower, Goofball, Busy Bee) and Green (Free Spirit, Life of the Party, Go-Getter). When you come to our shelter, you'll fill out a survey that will tell you which color (purple, orange, green) of dog would be your best match!

CARE volunteers, during their routine shift at the shelter, teach the shelter dogs gracious, polite behavior so when they go out in the real world they will impress everyone they meet. Obedience methods learned from Wendy DeCarlo and Dennis Damon of Dog Obedience Group are used exclusively.  We highly recommend that our dogs continue with Dog Obedience Group to ensure a seamless transition into their new home.

Dixon

Rottweiler Mix , 1 year old, Neutered male.

I am a big boy with a big heart to match! Once you get to know me, you'll see that I am a gentle giant who loves people and attention. I am looking for a home with a person who will take the time to train me and make sure that my breed and size don't get the best of me. I have learned a lot already here at the shelter and with my relaxed, eager-to-please attitude I think you'll find that keeping up my training will be easy. Do you have room in your home for an easy-going and affection friend who just wants to spend time with you?

Tinker

Domestic Shorthair, 3 years old, Brown Tabby, Spayed female.

I'm only three years old, but I've already experienced a lot. A long time ago some people adopted me from the shelter. They later put me outside to fend for myself. When help finally came I was near death and showed my bravery by fighting my way back to life. As a result of my near death experience, I suffered some neurological and vision problems, so I need an understanding human companion. I may not climb into your lap to snuggle, but I definitely want to be with you and I love being petted. I also love treats and sitting by the window to watch birds. Can you give me another chance to have a nice forever home?

Adoption Information:

Tinker would do best in a calm home with no dogs. She would be fine living with another very mellow cat.

No children under 12 years old.

Tinker needs to be accepted the way she is, quirks and all. Because of her poor eyesight, she must be approached slowly and gently. Sudden noises and movements frighten her. In the last few months she has gained the ability to walk up and down stairs, but she is unsteady as she does so. She does not have the strength to jump up on beds or sofas or chairs.

Tinker appears to have some neurological and vision problems. If you put a treat in front of her, she often can't see it but will sniff to find it. If she becomes stressed, she may turn in circles in order to calm herself down.

Tinker is microchipped, spayed, and has had a full veterinary checkup and vaccines.

Please come to the shelter to meet Tinker and speak to an adoption counselor for more information about her.  Thank you.

Botanica

Domestic Shorthair, 1 year old, Brown Tabby, Spayed female.

I really like people and am looking for a new home. In fact, I was found in the garden behind the shelter waiting to come in so you could find me here! I can be a shy girl, and when I first meet you I may be scared. But once I get to know you more, we can have lots of fun together. I love playing with toys, feathers and ribbons. After playtime is over, I may even let you stroke my soft silky fur! I am usually very sweet, but if I get too much attention I can get overwhelmed and a little feisty. Are you an understanding person who can give me a forever home?

ASPCA Feline-ality™ Assessment rating:  Purple / Secret Admirer.

Adoption Information:

Botanica needs an experienced owner.

No children under 12 years old.

Botanica's mood can change from sweet to feisty when she has had enough attention.

Paczki

Domestic Shorthair, 10 years old, Dilute Tortie, Spayed female.

Hi! My name is Paczki. I was brought into the shelter after my previous owner passed away. My whole world turned upside down, and I ended up here at the shelter, which has left me a little moody. I just don't know what to expect next! What I really want is to find a new person to spend the rest of my life with. I would fit in best with an experienced cat owner who will work with me to regain trust that my home won't disappear again! For now, I need someone who will go slow and allow me to open up in my own time. I'm a little cautious with being petted, but one thing that I do love is my catnip cigar! I'm interested in wand toys too. Will you give me a second chance at a forever home?

I may have started out as a stray, but I'm ready to find a forever home and a family that will love me for the sweet, furry guy I am! I'm hanging up my outdoor shoes and all I want now is some love and affection! I love attention and getting my long fur brushed, which is a good thing since grooming is very important for keeping my coat healthy! Won't you give me the chance to show you how grateful I am to find a nice warm home with a lap or two to snuggle in?

ASPCA Feline-ality™ Assessment rating:  Orange / Personal Assistant.

Pascha

Domestic Shorthair, 5 years old, Grey Tabby, Spayed female.

I am a sweet and outgoing girl who would love to tell you all about what's on my mind! I need a little space to feel secure in a new environment and I may seem cautious at first. But with a little time and patience, I will fit right into your home! I love attention, especially scratches on my head, but too much at once is a bit overwhelming for me. I like other cats and would enjoy a furry friend. Or if you want to give all your love to me, that's OK too! I can't wait for you to take me home so I can get settled and find my favorite warm spots to nap in!

Wobbles

I'm a very shy boy with a big heart! I once had a home, but the dog that lived there thought that I could be his next meal, so I ended up here. Now I'm looking for a new forever home and a human friend that I can be with all the time. I can be a little skittish at first, but once I get to know you I will follow you around and help you with whatever you are doing. Can you give me a second chance at a loving home? We just may be the next buddy team!

Cecilia

Domestic Shorthair, 2 years old, Dilute Calico/Tortie, Spayed female.

Like a true calico, I have a beautiful coat as well as some strong opinions and important ideas. I really want to share these deep thoughts with you, and I really believe that you understand me. I will be sure to tell you what I want and when, just so there's no confusion! I do like to cuddle up when I feel affectionate, but I'll let you know when that is and when I've had enough. I love to "kill" little fuzzy toy mice, but other toys are acceptable. My moods can vary, so the best match for me will be a person who wants a companion with an independant but sweet personality.

She should be in a home without children.
